This weekend, we celebrated two milestones: a birthday and the continued world travels of Simple Math Bakery’s cookies. The Boyfriend’s birthday was last week (one of the big ones – it ends in a “0″). What better way to celebrate than with a giant cookie (cake)? As for my cookies, they have now officially been consumed by fish and humans 61 feet underwater in the Mediterranean Sea. My friend Susannah travels the world as an underwater archaeology photographer. Someday I hope to accompany her on expedition as her official Personal Baker, but until then I send cookie care packages across the Atlantic Ocean.

What would life be like if we measured our nation’s success based on Gross National Happiness instead of Gross National Product? If we valued health, education, and sustainable communities above cash and consumer goods? Or, at the very least, broke our addiction to material goods?
These are some of the questions that I have been pondering over the last few months. An ever increasing number of people are changing their perspective on our consumer culture, and today we celebrate that shift in thinking. Buy Nothing Day seeks to inspire consumers to break the habit of spending and avoid the stress of shopping. Let’s do things differently today. Go for a hike, read a book, create art and music, bake a cake. To kick off Buy Nothing Day, I’ll be cutting up this credit card.

Although I’ve never played Portal, I think that the concept is intriguing. It’s set in a science laboratory and the main character is challenged to complete a series of puzzles, with the promise of receiving cake as a prize. The companion cube accompanies the character on her journey.
The Boyfriend requested that I make a companion cube cake for his birthday. I love the idea of a cube-shaped cake so it was a fun project to complete. I used buttercream, my favorite edible artistic medium, since we rank taste right up there with looks. Fondant just can’t come close to the taste of real buttercream!

Logos fascinate me. It’s incredible how much influence one small image can have. Logos work their way into our subconscious mind, persuading us to buy (or refrain from buying) a product. Logos transcend languages. When you see a soda can with text in a foreign language, chances are you’ll recognize the brand of soda by color and font alone. I’ll leave you all to your own opinion on whether this type of globalization is a good thing, a bad thing, or just an unavoidable fact of life in these modern times.

I’m giggling with delight as I imagine the responses I will get from my coworkers when they catch a glimpse of this cake on the table! I’m well known at the office for bringing in sweet treats, so I just couldn’t resist creating a sweet joke for April Fool’s Day.

Now, I realize that there’s a big game coming up tomorrow. But I swear that the timing on this cake is a huge coincidence. This cake was requested by my coworker, and her husband’s birthday just happens to be tomorrow. And he’s a Cowboys fan (obviously).
Here’s my disclaimer: This cake is for entertainment and instructional purposes only. It is not a representation of my football allegiances, nor is it an indication of support for any particular team.
Further disclaimer: If I HAD to pick a team to support, it would have to be my (former) hometown team, the Patriots. So all you football fans can judge me based on that!

By day, I am a cartographer. I edit geographic data, perform analyses, design map layouts, and provide my coworkers with baked goods.
Every year, The National Geographic Society sponsors Geography Awareness Week. GIS Day is on the Wednesday that falls within Geography Awareness Week, which makes today GIS Day! GIS and geography lovers all over the world celebrate in different ways, from holding an open house to working with local schools to raise awareness about how GIS makes a difference in our world.
