Monochrome Monday at Simple Math Bakery

mono ⋅ chrome : a painting, drawing, or photograph in shades of a single hue

Welcome to my black and white photography project. On the occasional Monday, I post a black and white photo that I have developed at home. I'm currently experimenting with Caffenol-C as a developer. Caffenol-C is a homemade solution that consists of instant coffee, vitamin C powder, and washing soda. As a food blogger, I find this a very appropriate way to develop film since two out of the three ingredients are edible! It can be an inconsistent process so developing each roll of film is an adventure.

Would you like to join in? The rules are simple: post a monochromatic photo, alone or as part of a blog post, on Monday. It can be analog or digital, black and white or shades of red - as long as it consists of just one color. Leave a link to your photo in the comments of my Monochrome Monday post. You may link to your blog, Flickr, or any other site that hosts your photo. If you would like to display the Monochrome Monday logo, you may use the code below:

Monochrome Monday: Looking Back

Anadama Bread

Creativity and innovation are the spice of life, but what good are new recipes if you can’t enjoy them again and again? A lunch invitation from my new friend Annie inspired me to dig up some of my old favorites and revive the sourdough starter that sat way in the back of my fridge, looking neglected and moldy. I’ve been craving the sweet, fluffy texture of Anadama Bread. One loaf for me and one loaf for Annie.

Monochrome Monday: Garlic

Garlic

Garlic is a relatively foolproof crop. It has to be, since we have an impressive yield in our yard this spring. Many of our other crops have been lost to frost, bugs, or general inattention. So it is especially satisfying to pull these fragrant bulbs out of the dirt and chop them up for use in just about any savory dish. I have yet to find a dessert calling for garlic. (If you know of one, please do inform me!)

Monochrome Monday: Photo Lab at Home

Today, I digress from baking to bring you a different sort of recipe – for developing black and white film. The process of developing film is really not that different from baking. It begins as you shop for ingredients or that perfect image, feeling the fruit in your hand to gauge ripeness or rotating the camera ever so slightly to frame the image as your mind envisions it.

Back in the kitchen, you consult a recipe. You may choose to follow it exactly as printed for a standard result or to vary the recipe and take your chances with the end product. In either case, the process is the same. Precisely-measured raw ingredients are mixed in a specific order, then allowed to set at a certain temperature for a specified length of time.

Developing my own film resonates with me, as does baking from scratch, for a few different reasons. It saves a bit of money, uses simple ingredients, and is more friendly for the environment than using chemical developers. Also, in a world where digital technology seems to be taking over each part of our lives, it’s a nice reminder that good old analog processes still produce results. It’s important to savor the process just as much as the result.

Ingredients for Caffenol Film Developing
Ingredients, from left to right: instant coffee, vitamin C powder, washing soda (can be found at your local hardware store), black and white fixer (the only chemical needed), graduated cylinder or other container that measures milliliters, film developing tank.

Monochrome Monday: Apples and Oranges

Apples and Oranges, still life
Apples and Oranges, still life

Developing film at home using instant coffee, vitamin c, and washing soda (Caffenol-C) is an unpredictable process. Each time I open the developing tank and unwind the film from the spool, I am surprised to see image after image lined up along the negative. This particular roll of film had me giddy with excitement. The film developing process that I use is a black & white process, and the images above were shot with color film. I was fully expecting to see a completely blank strip of film upon removing it from the tank. Instead I found a complete set of negatives with a wide range of color and contrast. Both images above came from the same roll and the color variation is fascinating. I have more results to share from this roll so stay tuned!

Monochrome Monday: Cob Ovens

Cob Ovens

These ovens produce some of the most incredible artisan bread and perfectly charred pizza. It is my goal to build one in my yard this year.

Monochrome Monday & Daring Bakers Challenge: Stollen

The 2010 December Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Penny of Sweet Sadie’s Baking. She chose to challenge Daring Bakers’ to make Stollen. She adapted a friend’s family recipe and combined it with information from friends, techniques from Peter Reinhart’s book………and Martha Stewart’s demonstration.
Stollen, with one piece missing

Welcome to the Daring Bakers challenge, Monochrome Monday edition! Capturing the challenge on black and white film was a bit daunting at first but I am pleased to present the results of this month’s challenge in the context of my weekly photography project.

Developing film is not that much different from baking. The ingredients must be carefully measured, then mixed in the correct proportions. The mixture goes into a tank with the roll of film. Developing time is dependent on temperature, among other factors. And if the film is left in the tank for too long, it will be ruined! Much like a loaf of bread.

Monochrome Monday: Pizza

Homemade Pizza

Sourdough Pizza Crust + Tomato Sauce + Garlic + Bell Peppers + Mozzarella

I have been longing for homemade pizza lately. My current schedule and living situation make it a bit more difficult to have the weekly pizza night that The Boyfriend and I have grown accustomed to. I’m hoping to get this tradition back on track soon.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a new recipe but I do hope that you haven’t completely given up on me. I have a sweet treat in store for you this week. Watch this space for a new cookie recipe!

Monochrome Monday: Rigging

Block

I’ve been out of the kitchen lately. My new job has transported me 80 miles away from my home so I’m still trying to settle into my new routine. I consider myself fortunate to be splitting my time between the mountains (where my house is) and the ocean (where my new job is).
