Daring Bakers Challenge: Panna Cotta and Florentine Cookies

The February 2011 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Mallory from A Sofa in the Kitchen. She chose to challenge everyone to make Panna Cotta from a Giada De Laurentiis recipe and Nestle Florentine Cookies.
Florentine Cookies with Chocolate Art

I have good news and bad news. Shall we start with the good news? These florentine cookies manage to achieve both chewy and crunchy cookie status in the same bite. And as an added bonus, the dough is basically a big sweet bowl of oatmeal with tons of butter in it. Definitely good news.

Daring Bakers Challenge: Biscuit Joconde Imprime/Entremet

The January 2011 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Astheroshe of the blog accro. She chose to challenge everyone to make a Biscuit Joconde Imprime to wrap around an Entremets dessert.
Joconde Imprime Entremets

The purpose of this challenge was to create a beautifully molded dessert with a pattern baked into the side – which it is, in this picture. So, technically, I completed the challenge. However, upon cutting the cake it all fell apart – literally.

Monochrome Monday & Daring Bakers Challenge: Stollen

The 2010 December Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Penny of Sweet Sadie’s Baking. She chose to challenge Daring Bakers’ to make Stollen. She adapted a friend’s family recipe and combined it with information from friends, techniques from Peter Reinhart’s book………and Martha Stewart’s demonstration.
Stollen, with one piece missing

Welcome to the Daring Bakers challenge, Monochrome Monday edition! Capturing the challenge on black and white film was a bit daunting at first but I am pleased to present the results of this month’s challenge in the context of my weekly photography project.

Developing film is not that much different from baking. The ingredients must be carefully measured, then mixed in the correct proportions. The mixture goes into a tank with the roll of film. Developing time is dependent on temperature, among other factors. And if the film is left in the tank for too long, it will be ruined! Much like a loaf of bread.

Happy Winter Fudge Cake

Slice of Happy Winter Cake

Happy Winter! With the constant rain that has been falling in southern California over the last week, it certainly feels like winter has arrived. Even though we won’t be experiencing any snow days, we will be treated to an extraordinary view of snow-capped mountains once the rain clouds and fog lift.

And after all, a rainy winter day is not much different from a snow day. Once the excitement of stomping in puddles or making snow angels wears off and the cold and damp air settles into your bones, it’s time to head inside and enjoy a warm cup of cocoa and a slice of chocolate fudge cake.

Mint Truffle Chocolate Chip Cookies

Mint Truffle Chocolate Chip Cookies, split in half

You know those super motivated people who churn out hundreds (thousands, even) of cookies and batch after batch of holiday candy? I don’t know how they do it. In my world, the days fly by so quickly that I’m lucky if I can cook dinner from scratch, never mind an entire bakery case full of goodies. If you’re one of those people, could you share your secret with me? Especially if it involves time travel, because I’ve always wanted to give that a try.

Pumpkin Twinkies

Homemade Pumpkin Twinkies

I love my readers. Truly I do. I am grateful for each and every one of you who stops to read my recipes and look at my photos. I strive to bring you the very best recipes, and to make them simple enough for anyone to make. I don’t like to post a recipe here unless it’s been tested and approved by The Boyfriend and I (tough job, but someone has to do it!).

I think it’s important to post recipes that could use a little work as well. I certainly have learned from others’ mistakes in the past. And with an entire community of food bloggers out there, collaboration will only make a recipe better! So I’d like to tell you about these pumpkin twinkies.

Pumpkin Swirl Brownies

Pumpkin Swirl Brownies, stacked

Whew. Things are finally back to normal around here. I wasn’t too keen on participating in Project Food Blog at first, but as I read the list of challenges I was inspired. The creative part of my brain took over and I began to imagine how I could take each challenge and create something new and unique. With the support of each of you who voted for me, I was able to present five different challenges. It was a whirlwind five weeks. It was stressful at times, but somehow each challenge got completed on schedule.

It was a joy to peruse the new entries every Monday and discover new blogs. Every single contestant has their own special flair and it has been such a treat to sift through the entries each week. I’d like to take the time to share some of my favorite new blogs along with a few that I’ve been reading for a while now.

Cupcakes, A Girl's Best Friend

Four cupcakes sitting around the dinner table

Today I’m celebrating with four of my best friends. I have advanced to the third challenge in Project Food Blog, which requires the contestants to hold a luxury dinner party. As I brainstormed how to execute this challenge while staying true to my blog’s goals, I realized that creativity was the most important aspect. We are given prompts for the challenge, but allowed to let our imagination run wild. Sometimes, that can be a dangerous thing…

Brownies for Barter

Brownie, sliced square

I made you some brownies. I wish I could share them with each and every one of you, over a tall glass of milk. It would be the perfect end to a late summer weekend. Would you settle for some photos and a recipe?

Perhaps you’d be willing to barter a few extra minutes of your time for one of these brownies. Today is the first day of voting for Project Food Blog, and I’d love it if you could stop by and show your support for Simple Math Bakery. Get to know me by reading my post for the first challenge, then click on my profile picture in the right sidebar to vote. Coconut Cupcakes and Cob Cottages

Coconut Cupcakes with Chocolate Buttercream

All next week, I’ll be playing in the mud. I’m super excited to be attending my first cob building workshop! Cob is a building material made from clay, sand, and straw. It can be used to sculpt beautiful homes that are energy efficient and non-toxic. I’ve had my eye on cob workshops for years, visited as many naturally built structures as I could find, and now I have the opportunity to actually work on one! I’m celebrating with cupcakes.
