Sourdough Gingerbread With Spiced Whipped Cream

Sourdough Gingerbread With Spiced Whipped Cream

On these chilly winter mornings, it’s essential to fire up the oven and create something warm and comforting. Something with a hint of holiday spice and a dollop of freshly whipped cream. Brew a cup of tea and wait for the sun to rise over the trees, finally slanting into the window later and later each day. During the dark days of December, my one small kitchen window receives only a precious hour or so of sunlight. This little window looks out on the white brick wall of our neighbor’s garage, which is about four feet away. My window faces east, but receives no direct sunlight due to the proximity of this garage. Instead, the early afternoon sunlight bounces off the white wall and into my kitchen. It’s the ultimate reflector for photography, and I am rewarded with great natural light if I time my baking just right.

Daring Bakers Challenge: Povitica

The Daring Baker’s October 2011 challenge was Povitica, hosted by Jenni of The Gingered Whisk. Povitica is a traditional Eastern European Dessert Bread that is as lovely to look at as it is to eat!
Povitica with pumpkin filling

There’s always something special about bread with a spiral inside. Its unassuming exterior renders it almost indistinguishable from any other loaf of bread. But far from being just any other loaf of bread, it has something special to offer. Perhaps it’s a savory, herby filling that, when surrounded by dense bread, could just about pass itself off as an entire meal. Or that classic cinnamon swirl that so many of us loved as a child. Or just maybe, an autumn treat filled with spiced pumpkin butter. No matter your filling of choice, this Povitica recipe will have you racking your brain for new flavor combinations to pair with the slightly sweet, dreamy dough.

Roasted Banana Cheesecake With Maple Rum Sauce

Roasted Banana Cheesecake

Or, the cheesecake that was almost vegan…

Happy New Year! Since I’m not one for resolutions or year-in-review posts, I decided to start the new year with a new baking challenge: vegan cheesecake. I’ve never made a cheesecake before but Leinana’s roasted banana cheesecake has been calling my name for months now. If you’re a peanut butter and banana junkie, it’ll soon be calling your name too.

In Celebration of Buy Nothing Day

Credit Card Cake

What would life be like if we measured our nation’s success based on Gross National Happiness instead of Gross National Product? If we valued health, education, and sustainable communities above cash and consumer goods? Or, at the very least, broke our addiction to material goods?

These are some of the questions that I have been pondering over the last few months. An ever increasing number of people are changing their perspective on our consumer culture, and today we celebrate that shift in thinking. Buy Nothing Day seeks to inspire consumers to break the habit of spending and avoid the stress of shopping. Let’s do things differently today. Go for a hike, read a book, create art and music, bake a cake. To kick off Buy Nothing Day, I’ll be cutting up this credit card.

Carrot Spice Muffins

Carrot Spice Muffin, sliced in half

We are lucky to have an abundance of delicious carrots at our local farmers market. It’s one of my favorite purchases every week. They even come with the greens attached. I’m sure there’s a cooking method for the greens, but I haven’t yet experimented with them. Anybody have any recommendations for carrot greens? For now, the carrot greens go to enrich my compost pile. And the carrots this week went into these muffins!

Banana Oatmeal Spice Muffins

Banana oatmeal muffins are my go to muffin.  I always have the ingredients on hand and it’s so easy to whip up a batch.  My basic recipe is very forgiving.  I can change it up in any number of ways and the muffins still come out delicious.

This time I’ve made them healthier and added a bit of spice.  Now I don’t feel so guilty when I reach for one to help me get through those last two hours of the workday!

Daring Bakers Challenge: Gingerbread Point Sur Lighthouse

The December 2009 Daring Bakers’ challenge was brought to you by Anna of Very Small Anna and Y of Lemonpi. They chose to challenge Daring Bakers’ everywhere to bake and assemble a gingerbread house from scratch. They chose recipes from Good Housekeeping and from The Great Scandinavian Baking Book as the challenge recipes.

Gingerbread Lighthouse

This month, the Daring Bakers were challenged to build a gingerbread house.  I knew instantly that I wanted to do something a little bit different than the typical holiday house.  It only took me a few moments to decide what I wanted to build.

Gingerbread Scones

Gingerbread Scones

Ah, gingerbread.  The smell of the holidays.  I figure that it’s time to start baking with gingerbread when the stores have their holiday displays up.  I’m pretty sure that they used to wait until after Thanksgiving to deck the halls.  But yesterday I found myself in the middle of a winter wonderland as I did some (what I thought was “early”) Christmas shopping.
